The territory of modern Uzbekistan was inhabited by ancient people in the Paleolithic (Obi-Rahmat, Teshik-Tash). The history of the Uzbek people is closely connected with the history of other Turkic peoples of Central Asia both inside and outside present-day Uzbekistan. The appearance of the first states on the territory of Uzbekistan dates back to the 7th – 8th centuries BC, when such states as Khorezm, Sogdiana and Bactria were created. The oldest cities on the territory of modern Uzbekistan are Samarkand (742 BC), Bukhara (IV century BC), Khiva (VI century BC), Shakhrisabz (VII century BC) , Tashkent and Margilan (2nd century BC), Karshi and Termez (5th century BC).
